Water Harvesting for Sustainable Environment, Food Security and Community Development in Kenya : A case of Makueni County

This is a project that was undertaken by the UNESCO/UNITWIN Chair in collaboration with College of Architectural and Engineering (UoN), Tekno International Kenya and KREP-Development Agency. The project was initiated in 2011 and aimed to seek innovative ways to address the chronic problem of water scarcity in Tulimani division in Mbooni West District, Makueni County. The team intended to make use of locally available materials and skills to achieve their objective of promoting rainwater harvesting technologies, utilization and management, and building capacity in rainwater harvesting among communities living in the arid and semi-arid regions in Kenya. Through funding from the UNESCO, the collaborators aimed at providing clean drinking water for the local inhabitants especially the vulnerable groups, women self-help groups and the communities by empowering them through training on harvesting and conserving water for both domestic and irrigation purposes.
