Visit by FORD Foundations President to the University of Nairobi on 10th January 2019.

Ford Foundation has had an MOU with the UNESCO/ UNITWIN Chair for ….years now. That has seen them work together in projects that have improved the quality life of Women and youth in the following Counties; Nairobi, Makueni, Kwale and Homabay. Currently the Chair is working on a project involving youth “Elimika Uwajibike, Vijana Amkeni” in partnership with Ford Foundation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education and UNESCO.

The visit by Ford Foundation President to the University of Nairobi was aimed at cementing the organizations voice in matters relating to Youth Empowerment. Mr. Walker urged the youth to overcome the challenges posed by inequalities. Giving a public lecture at the University of Nairobi’s Taifa Hall where he addressed several issues including, inequality, education, entrepreneurship, philanthropy.  Reflecting on his own life he observed that he had to overcome several challenges to be where he is today.  He commended the Universityfor having one of the most modern conference halls around the world and announced a support grant of USD 400,000 to help in the modernization of the hall.

Speaking on governance, he urged Kenyans to demand for service delivery, representation and less corruption. Darren observed that as Ford Foundation, they are keen on supporting ideas, institutions and individuals. Urging young people to be proactive in entrepreneurship rather than relying on employment. He stated; “Let us empower young people, educate young people and we shall eliminate inequality. You cannot have dignity without a job”.

The public lecture was attended by both University and Government of Kenya representatives.
